Cranberries for the other 364 days of the year.

My least favorite side on the Thanksgiving spread was once cranberry sauce. Then it was my turn to prepare this giant feast. Being the budding foodie that I was at the time, I tweaked all the recipes with new ingredients and flavors that peaked my interest. Three years later, I can’t seem to get enough of these things on Thanksgiving, and (gasp) I may make them again. This side dish/ leftover tastes great on bagels, oatmeal, yogurt, and just as is by themselves.

Chipotle Sweet Potato Gratin

Current obsession: canned chipotles in adobo sauce. I bought them specifically for Thanksgiving dinner to try out a new recipe and now I can’€™t get enough of them. I’€™ve been adding them to scrambles, mixing them into salsa to spice things up, and I’m constantly looking for new things to do with them. So when I saw this recipe in my overflowing Foodbuzz inbox, it got bookmarked and made the next day. The sweet & spicy combo can’€™t be beat.

Spanish Quinoa

I’m always looking for new things to add to my black bean burgers. I don’t usually eat them with a bun so just the burger alone is never enough. One of the first recipes I flipped to when I got Sarah Matheny’s cookbook was the Spanish Quinoa. Bingo! I love the versatility of quinoa and I already know I am going to love the flexibility of this gem of a recipe. Tasty on a burger, tasty as a side……really tasty when potato chips (preferably Wavy Lays) are used as the spoon!

Applesauce Kugel

We recently had a deli dinner night with the works: corned beef, pastrami, potato salad, cole slaw, rye bread and pickles. To top off the deli experience I made kugel! I had barely enough noodles, but no apples. I peeked through my pantry and found applesauce. I thought, “Surely there must be some sort of awesome substitute using applesauce instead of chopped apples.” And sure enough, there is!

Martha Rose Shulman’s Olive Oil Crackers

Martha Rose Shulman develops recipes for the Recipes for Health section of the New York Times. Her recipes are right up my alley – clean, simple and mostly vegetarian. I have been wanting to make these crackers for a while now so when my friend gave me a jar of za’atar she brought back from Israel, I couldn’t resist. Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice mix of thyme, sesame seeds and sumac. Its herby flavor and lemony accents are a great seasoning on everything from eggs and pizza to avocado and salads.
