Great-Grandma Austa’s Beef and Noodles

Before we left North Carolina back in September, Beau’s mom handed me two pieces of paper. One contained the recipe for her lasagna (the best I’ve ever had), and the other contained a family recipe for beef and noodles. Now, I can tell you right off the bat that a recipe for something like ‘beef and noodles’ is not something I would normally go for. Especially one that includes short ribs, if only for the fact that short ribs were something I was unfamiliar with, and therefore not in any hurry to get to…

Applesauce Kugel

We recently had a deli dinner night with the works: corned beef, pastrami, potato salad, cole slaw, rye bread and pickles. To top off the deli experience I made kugel! I had barely enough noodles, but no apples. I peeked through my pantry and found applesauce. I thought, “Surely there must be some sort of awesome substitute using applesauce instead of chopped apples.” And sure enough, there is!

Revisiting a Classic: Mac and Cheese

If you’re running off to the cupboard to zap some Easy Mac, HALT. Go no further! A far superior Mac and Cheese awaits you. And if, like me, you find yourself soothed by procedure, routine, and production, then this, friends, is the Mac and Cheese for you. There is no microwave involved. No vaguely-cheesy orange powder. If you’re lucky, it may even give you back morethan you bargained for.

Summer Spaghetti: Broad beans, spinach and mint

For us, as non-natives, part of the goodness of eating seasonally is actually discovering what is in fact seasonal. Moving on, this recipe was the first time we used them and it is pretty good. All can be made while the pasta is boiling and happily exists without the cheese if you want to go dairy-free.

Summer Asparagus and Pesto Pasta

Ok, so I may have overlooked the asparagus in last week’s post farmer’s market purge of the fridge. Then yesterday, there they were! Napping in the drawer and not bothering to gain my attention while I dug through the bell peppers to get to the red onion. Then, once I spotted them, they had to become one of the main parts of my dinner. *brainstorm begins* As I am still working my way through the freezer as well, I happened upon have a package of Buitoni. So there it is, the beginnings of my fresh summery…

Pasta with Bacon, Peas and Garlic Scapes

It’s finally July – the month when the summer markets really start to hit their stride. I’ve been lucky enough to spend a bit of time traveling over the past few weeks, including spending a wonderful few days in the beautiful Muskoka region of Ontario. One of my favourite things about driving through rural areas in the summertime is stopping at roadside markets and fruit stands. As luck would have it, the community of Bala was having a farmers’ market the day we…
